Best Practices

Tips for Better Screenshots

Proven techniques to increase App Store conversion rates.

Show the Key Value Immediately

Your first screenshot is your most powerful. Show the core benefit, not a login screen or empty state. Users scan app listings in seconds.

Do

  • Feature your app's main function
  • Show populated content (real data)
  • Use bold headlines above the device

Don't

  • Start with onboarding screens
  • Show empty/placeholder states
  • Put disclaimers on screenshot 1

Write Punchy Captions

Text overlays turn screenshots into mini advertisements. Use 3–6 words of benefit-focused copy above or below the device mockup.

Do

  • Use verbs: 'Track, Organize, Ship faster'
  • Match your App Store subtitle tone
  • Keep it under 40 characters

Don't

  • Describe features, not benefits
  • Use jargon or technical terms
  • Cram multiple sentences in one screen

Create a Visual Story Arc

Design your screenshots as a sequence. Screenshot 1 hooks attention, screenshots 2–4 show depth, the final screenshot closes with social proof.

Do

  • Use a consistent color palette
  • Each screenshot answers a different question
  • End with ratings, reviews, or a CTA

Don't

  • Repeat the same layout for every shot
  • Use different fonts per screenshot
  • Ignore the flow between screens

Choose Backgrounds Strategically

Background colors communicate category and tone. Dark gradients signal premium; bright gradients signal consumer/lifestyle apps.

Do

  • Test both dark and light backgrounds
  • Use gradients with depth
  • Match background to your app icon palette

Don't

  • Use photos that distract from the UI
  • Pick colors with poor contrast for text
  • Ignore competitors' visual style

Use Accurate Device Frames

Use the latest hardware (iPhone 15/16, Pixel 8, Galaxy S24) rather than dated frames. Mismatched hardware can make an app look unmaintained.

Do

  • Match device frame to your primary audience
  • Use matching colors across screenshots
  • Keep frames proportional to the canvas

Don't

  • Mix iPhone SE and Pro Max frames
  • Use stretched or distorted frames
  • Forget to crop to screen bounds

Localize for Each Market

App Store Connect allows separate screenshots per locale. Localized screenshots for top markets (DE, JP, KR) can increase conversion by 20–40%.

Do

  • Translate captions for top markets
  • Adapt layouts for RTL languages
  • Use market-appropriate device colors

Don't

  • Use English screenshots for all locales
  • Machine-translate marketing copy
  • Ignore cultural color meanings

Integration

Integration Guides

How to upload your screenshots to each platform store.

App Store Connect (iOS / iPadOS / macOS)

  1. 1In App Store Connect, open your app → select the version → 'App Store' tab
  2. 2Scroll to 'Screenshots' under each device type (iPhone, iPad, Mac)
  3. 3Drag & drop your exported PNGs in the correct size slots
  4. 4Add optional caption text in the 'App Preview and Screenshots' section
  5. 5Required: 6.9" or 6.7" iPhone + 12.9" iPad (if iPad supported)
  6. 6Click 'Save' then submit for review

App Store Connect rejects screenshots with transparency (alpha channel). Export as PNG without alpha or as JPEG.

Google Play Console (Android)

  1. 1In Play Console, open your app → 'Store presence' → 'Main store listing'
  2. 2Scroll to 'Screenshots' and select device type (Phone, 7-inch, 10-inch)
  3. 3Upload 2–8 screenshots per device category
  4. 4First screenshot becomes the featured image in search results
  5. 5Optionally upload a feature graphic (1024 × 500 px) for the store banner
  6. 6Save draft and submit for review

Google Play uses the first screenshot as the thumbnail in search. Make sure it works standalone without surrounding context.

Microsoft Store (Windows)

  1. 1In Partner Center, open your app submission → 'Store listings' → select language
  2. 2Under 'Screenshots', upload PNG/JPEG files (1280 × 720 px minimum)
  3. 3First image is used as the featured screenshot in Store search
  4. 4Add captions (up to 200 characters) for each screenshot
  5. 5You can upload up to 9 screenshots + up to 15 video trailers
  6. 6Submit the updated listing

Windows Store screenshots render at multiple sizes. Use simple layouts that read clearly at thumbnail scale.
